A Traditional Bulgarian Sedenka featuring Divi Zheni, Mladost, Omaya, and Zornitsa

An afternoon concert by Divi Zheni and Omaya, together with the Bulgarian Center of New England and Bulgarian American Center Madara.  At this sedenka we shared traditions honoring St. Trifon Zarezan, also known as Trifon the Pruner – the patron saint of grape-vine pruning and wine! St. Trifon’s feast is celebrated by Bulgarian vine growers in mid-winter, and includes rituals to encourage a bountiful crop. Featuring performances by Boston-based Balkan choral ensembles Divi Zheni, Zornitsa and Omaya, directed by world-renowned Bulgarian vocal artist Tatiana Sarbinska, and by the fiery Mladost Folk Ensemble directed by Andy Taylor-Blenis. With a food sale to benefit the Bulgarian Center of New England.

Divi Zheni presented music, dance, and rituals from Lazaruvane, the springtime festival of St. Lazarus, which bids health, prosperity, and fertility to households, and blesses fields, forests and rivers, followed by live music for Balkan dancing and delicious refreshments. This event was a fundraiser for the church’s Community Supper Kitchen, which feeds over 100 people every week — thanks to our wonderful audience for their support!

Performance for the President of Bulgaria, Rosen Plevneliev

The Honorary Consul of the Republic of Bulgaria in Massachusetts, The Bulgarian American Cultural Center Madara in Boston, and Europeans in Boston hosted a community meeting with the President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Mr. Rosen Plevneliev. Divi Zheni was honored to perform a short concert set for the President, who was in the US to attend the 67th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. Co-sponsored by the Cambridge Innovation Center.

Divi Zheni, Zornitsa, and Orfeia in Concert at Koprivshtitsa

National Folklore Festival, Main Festival State and Town Square Stage

Koprivshtitsa, Bulgaria

This National Folklore Festival takes place once every five years, in the beautiful mountain hamlet of Koprivshtitsa. Villages, towns and cities from all over Bulgaria send their best folk musicians and dancers to perform traditional works for three music-drenched days, as beautiful, ancient harmonies resound from peak to peak, and elevate the listeners’ souls. Visitors come from around the world to experience and participate. We joined our brother group Zornitsa and our sister group Orfeia performing village-style folk songs at the festival. Deepest thanks to our audience members for their support this year, which made this trip possible. We look forward to sharing with you some of the new songs we learned.
